Trillium Lake and Mt Hood
by jim on Jan.21, 2009, under Lakes, Mountains
Taken from the area around the boat launch at Trillium Lake, this view of Mt Hood has always been one of my favorites.
Take US 26 East from Portland and after Government Camp, look for the signs to Trillium Lake. This view is a very short walk from parking, 100 feet or so.
You can see the area in a Google map here. Zoom out to see Mt Hood to the North of the lake.

Ft. Rock At Night
by jim on Jan.21, 2009, under Landscapes
Once in a while I like to take photographs under a full moon. If you look carefully, you can see Ursa Major, otherwise know as “The Big Dipper” or “The Great Bear” above Ft. Rock.
The Oregon State Parks Dept has a basic page about Ft. Rock here.
From Bend take Hwy 97 South to Hwy 31. Take Hwy 31 for about 30 miles and look for the signs. You cannot miss it to the left/North of the highway.

Three Creeks Lake
by jim on Jan.21, 2009, under Lakes
Three Creeks Lake is framed in by the Tam MacArthur Rim. You can see it here as a stone “wall” in the background. If you are up for a hike, the views at the top are breathtaking. If you continue to the area around Broken Hand, you will be able to face one way and see the South and Middle Sisters, turn around and see Mt Bachelor. WOW.
From Sisters take South Elm St, it turns into 3 Creeks Road outside of town. Follow it to the end of the road when you see a view like this. At the end, the road turns to dirt and can be a little rough, but most cars will make it without any problems.

Sparks Lake with South Sister
by jim on Jan.21, 2009, under Lakes, Mountains
Sparks Lake sits between Mt Bachelor and the South Sister. Great views any way you look.
Just follow the signs in Bend to Mt Bachelor taking you down Century Drive and then the Cascades Lakes Highway. Just after the Mt Bachelor ski resort you will see the signs for the lake. Well worth the trip!
There is a Google map of the area here.

Santiam Pass Burn Recovery
by jim on Jan.21, 2009, under Landscapes, Plants
Several years ago there was a bad forest fire around the Santiam Pass area. This is just a photo showing how the area is recovering.
There is a Google Map of the area here. You can tell from the satellite photo that the area has been affected by something. Seeing it in person lets you see the destruction and the rebirth of the area.
