Summer Lake Bird 2

Birds from Summer Lake. Summer Lake is on the ‘Oregon Outback National Scenic Byway’ that runs from the Hwy-97 and Hwy-31 junction near LaPine to the California border. The Highway is 171 miles of natural, scenic, and archaeological features.

See a Google Map of the area here.

I think that these animals are Desert Mountain Sheep.  There are photographs of some at the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center and these look like the animals in the photographs.  If these are not Desert Mountain Sheep, please let me know and I will update the information on this page.

We saw them crossing the Hwy-140 East of Lakeview in Central Oregon.  They traveled in a small herd of about eight animals.

You can see a view of the area here at Google Maps.

Desert Mountain Sheep

Just some ducks.

They could be from anywhere in the state, but these were in the Cline Falls State Park. The park is between Sisters and Redmond in Central Oregon. You can find the park here at Google Maps.

The Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area is 1,040 acres of pasture, woodlands and wetlands. It is managed for the elk that call the area home, about 100 of which make it their year round home.

If you happen to be there in the early morning and evening, you will probably see the elk, they are free to roam the area. The elk breeding season is from September to October.

The bottomland has been expanded into a habitat for waterfowl, many of which are close to the viewing areas.

The Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area is located four miles east of Reedsport on Hwy 38. You can see a map of the area here. The viewing area is not displayed in the map contents.

Oregon has a wide range of animals; from the majestic Bald Eagle to the stealthy Mountain Lion, from the friendly squirrel to the stinky skunk, from the cute butterfly to the ugly toad.  The exact location isn’t really an issue here, general location is.  Look for loosening of the directions in this category.
